How to measure stairs for carpet.
Height of the step.
To calculate how much carpet you ll need for your stairs start by measuring the width of 1 tread with a tape measure and add 2 inches to make sure you have enough carpet.
After measuring the riser get the length and width of any landings then round all of your measurements up to the nearest foot.
For a typical set of 12 box stairs measuring 3 wide using a carpet that is 12 wide you would require 12 x 4 6 in a 12 width of carpet you get 4 box stairs 12 divided by 3 so every 12 x 18 gives you 4 stairs.
Divide by 12 and round up to get the number of feet.
